Places to visit during a family safari in Tanzania

1. Serengeti national Park

Our flagship destination, the Serengeti, is famous for its vast savannah, where you can witness the Great Migration in all its glory. Imagine how happy your family will be when they see the Big Five and more.
Spread over 14,750 square kilometers, the Serengeti is home to a wide variety of wildlife. During your visit you may encounter a variety of wildlife including lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, as well as cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hippos and a variety of birds.
The Great Migration is a unique spectacle. More than two million wildebeest and zebra cross the Serengeti in search of greener pastures. Witnessing this migration is an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

2. Ngorongoro conservation Area

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is an extraordinary wildlife sanctuary with a rich diversity of animals, including the elusive rhino and graceful flamingos.

This massive natural wonder is the largest intact volcanic crater in the world, covering an area of over 260 square kilometers and offering stunning topography. Within its range you will encounter a fascinating array of wildlife, making it an unmissable destination for avid wildlife lovers. Keep an eye out for herds of wildebeest, zebra and various antelopes.

A particularly special highlight was the opportunity to witness a rhino in its native habitat, a spectacle that is increasingly rare on the African continent due to the tragic effects of poaching. Additionally, the crater’s soda lake provides a haven for flamingos, with thousands of graceful birds creating a stunning pink spectacle. However, keep in mind that Ngorongoro Crater can get very busy during peak season, so we recommend considering a day trip at most to get the most out of your experience.

3. Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is a hidden gem known for its massive elephant herds and stunning baobab trees, making it an idyllic getaway for avid photographers and families.

Tarangire covers approximately 2,600 square kilometres, and is the precious home to some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. Witnessing these gentle giants in their natural realm is a heartwarming encounter that transcends generations.

In addition to its numerous elephants, Tarangire is home to an abundance of wildlife, including majestic lions, elusive leopards, agile cheetahs, graceful giraffes, zebras and numerous fascinating antelope species. The park’s iconic baobab trees, often whimsically called the “Upside Down Tree,” form an ethereal backdrop to your safari adventure.

However, it’s worth noting that Tarangire really shines during the dry season, making it a prime time to visit this remarkable reserve.

4. Saadani national Park

Saadani National Park offers a distinctive blend of untamed wilderness and serene coastline, where you can witness remarkable wildlife against the backdrop of the pristine Indian Ocean shores. This coastal gem, Tanzania’s only national park by the sea, beckons as a unique destination for families in search of both exhilarating wildlife encounters and tranquil beach getaways. Encompassing an expansive area of approximately 1,100 square kilometers, Saadani caters to a wide spectrum of interests.

Embark on captivating game drives through Saadani, where you can marvel at the sight of majestic lions, elusive leopards, grand elephants, formidable buffalos, and graceful giraffes, along with a symphony of diverse bird species gracing the skies. The park’s estuaries and lush mangrove forests also host the enigmatic presence of hippos and crocodiles, adding to the rich tapestry of wildlife experiences.

But Saadani’s allure doesn’t end with its terrestrial wonders. It boasts the distinction of being Tanzania’s only national park that extends into the Indian Ocean, encompassing a vibrant marine ecosystem. Whether you’re a fan of snorkeling or simply relishing the serene beauty of the ocean, the marine park within Saadani offers an enticing aquatic realm to explore.

What makes Saadani even more enticing is that it’s a year-round destination (except April and May), with each season offering its unique charm. Whether you visit during the dry season, when wildlife congregates around water sources, or in the wet season, when the landscape transforms into a lush green oasis, Saadani promises a memorable experience at any time of the year. This versatility sets it apart as a truly exceptional destination that caters to all tastes and preferences.

5. Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve)

Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is a rugged and pristine reserve filled with abundant wildlife, especially the fascinating African wild dog.

At a staggering 50,000 square kilometers, Nyerere is one of the largest protected areas on the African continent. It’s a haven in the wilderness where you can embrace true solitude and immerse yourself in the wonders of the natural world.

The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including majestic elephants, mighty buffalo, majestic lions, elusive leopards, river-dwelling hippos, and crocodiles, ancient guardians of waterways. Remarkably, Nyerere is also home to the endangered African wild dog, providing a truly unique opportunity to witness these charismatic predators in their unspoiled native habitat.

If you want to immerse yourself even more deeply into Nyerere’s enchanting realm, don’t miss the opportunity to take a mesmerizing boat trip on Lake Tagalala, an experience that promises to reveal more of the park’s secrets and hidden wonders treasure.

What to expect on a Tanzania family safari trip

Family safari game drives

Game drives in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are very special. If you stay at a hotel that provides a private car for your family, you’ll be able to explore away from the crowds. These areas also offer cultural activities suitable for all ages. Adults can enjoy interacting with working-age and elderly members of the community, while children can get to know local kids.

Family safari activities in the Serengeti

The Serengeti really excels when it comes to family safari activities for teenagers – tracking, making bows and arrows, and walking around the camp with the staff are just a few examples of what kids can do here. There’s always something to see around the campground, from birds to small mammals, and the staff are great at entertaining the kids.

Family safari activities in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous)

In Nyerere, one can fish and canoe, at least for older children. The minimum age requirement for the walk is 15, so this activity is suitable for mid to late teens. Hiking offers a thrilling opportunity to experience the jungle, offering a different perspective than a game drive.
